One last dance
Vancouver's underground dance scene gets its send-off on September 12. THE LAB, the by-artists-for-artists event series that has been packing rooms across the city, is closing the book with a Grand Finale, and the format is exactly what you would hope: every winner from their past events comes back to compete one final time.

Why this series mattered
Plenty of cities have dance nights. What THE LAB built was rarer: a competition circuit run by the artists themselves, where the crowd is half dancers and the energy comes from people who know exactly how hard the moves are. Win one of their events and the room knew your name. Now all of those names share one floor, one night, winner takes the title.
For a city that empties into the streets after midnight looking for somewhere still awake, nights like this are the whole point of the West End.

If you have never been to one
A dance competition crowd is its own thing. Nobody sits down, the circle decides who won long before the judges do, and the loudest moment of the night is usually for a move half the room cannot name. You do not need to know the difference between popping and breaking to have a good time, you just need to show up early enough to get inside.
Grand finales are also where scenes hand themselves to the next generation. The dancers watching from the edge of the floor this September are the ones who will be running whatever comes after THE LAB. That alone is worth the ticket.
